Continue readingThe SDCA figures show that, during the first six months of 2024, there has been a net decrease of 21 dairy herds (2.6 per cent) within Scotland making a current total of 773. The total number of dairy cows is 180,250. a decrease of 398 or 0.25 per cent over the same period. The average herd size in Scotland continues to rise and now stands at 233, up by 6 from the start of the year. Encouragingly, new herds started up in Dumfriesshire, Wigtownshire, and Lanarkshire but 16 herds in Ayrshire chose to leave dairying between January and July this year. The latest figures follow the national trend of declining dairy producers. A recent annual AHDB survey of the major milk buyers, it was estimated that there were 7130 dairy producers in Great Britain, highlighting a decline of 440 or 5.8 per cent on the previous year. Despite falling producer numbers, milk production in GB is only back 0.2 per cent year-on-year.

Continue readingThe Hannah Dairy Research Foundation is delighted to announce the sixth Conference in the Next Generation Dairying series, which will be held at the Moredun Research Institute, Edinburgh, on Monday 18th and Tuesday 19th November 2024 (“lunch to lunch”). The theme for this year’s Next Generation Data-Led Dairying Conference revolves around the use of data in the dairy sector. In an era where “Artificial Intelligence” has revolutionised the acronym AI for farmers, the opportunities offered by the collection, processing and use of detailed information are substantial. So, perhaps, are the risks. There are significant challenges to be overcome if the full potential of data-based decision-making is to be realised. How should the data be gathered in the first place? How much data is needed, and can there be an excess that hinders rather than helps? Who owns the data? How should it be processed and interpreted to obtain maximum benefit? Who takes responsibility if things go wrong? How far down the AI route should we go? Where in the dairy foods chain could data use have most (and least) impact? Eminent international scientists, engineers and computer experts will address these issues and others in afternoon and morning sessions, lunch-to-lunch. We will also hear from those “in the field”, the users of data in farm and financial management, in veterinary healthcare, in product safety and quality control and in high level policy development. Short scientific presentations and posters from younger Scottish and international scientists will complement the plenary talks. All speakers will be challenged to include a clear statement “The impact of the research to farmers is ..” The venue is once again the Moredun Research Institute and, whilst virtual engagement will be possible, we strongly encourage active participation, face to face. Attendance will be free and by invitation only, with expressions of interest opening soon. Competitively-awarded travel grants will be available within the UK. The social programme will feature a Conference Dinner in Edinburgh on the Monday evening.

Continue readingThis study is the first of its kind to demonstrate the realistic emissions reductions possible for Scottish dairy farmers if they adopt and utilize PLF technologies for improvement of farm management and efficiency. Although this modeling was based on average Scottish farm data, a similar modeling framework could be used across European dairying systems to evaluate the effects of implementing PLF technologies on emissions. However, it must be noted that changes are farm specific and the extent to which the reduction in GHG emissions could be achieved varies greatly between individual farms and systems. Despite the indicative nature of this modeling, it is a useful tool to demonstrate to industry and farmers that PLF tools can not only improve an animal’s fertility, health, or production as intended, but that they can have a positive impact on total emissions and product emissions, by improving efficiency and resilience in some scenarios and enterprises.

Continue readingAHDB Dairy Report Over the last ten years, we have seen changes in the output of the dairy herd, with industry strategies moving to reduce dairy bull calves and a significant increase in dairy beef. BCMS data allows us to see the impact of these initiatives in calf registration numbers Steady decline in Holstein registrations Holstein Friesian (HF) has consistently been the most popular calf breed on the dairy farm since 2014. However, the number and share of calves born to dairy dams that are registered HF has been steadily reducing over the same period. In 2014, 516,000 HF calves were registered to dairy dams, making up 38% of the total calves registered to dairy in that year. By 2023, that number had reduced to 317,000 HF calves, representing 22% of the output of the dairy dams in that year. Digging into these numbers, it is not surprising to see that this change was primarily driven by a large reduction in the number of bull HF calves registered. In 2023, 59,000 bull HF calves were registered, an almost fourfold decrease from the 225,500 in 2014. Registrations of HF heifers have also declined in the last ten years, albeit in a much steadier manner. They have declined from a peak of 297,000 in 2015 to 258,000 in 2023. This follows the trend of gradual, long-term decline in the population of the milking herd, due to improvements in productivity, meaning that fewer replacement heifers are required to come into the dairy herd to maintain milk yields, alongside some reduction in herd numbers as producers have exited the industry.

Continue readingThe Scottish Government is seeking your views on changes to cattle identification and traceability in Scotland. The introduction of bovine electronic identification (EID) has been a longstanding industry request. EID is seen by many in the farming sector as an opportunity to modernise and improve on efficiencies whilst supporting competitiveness within the supply chain. Furthermore, EID could also be used to improve on-farm management practices as well as on-farm automation. The technology provides additional health and safety benefits in being able to read cattle at a safe distance. As set out in the Vision for Agriculture, the Scottish Ministers recognise that the development and the introduction of new technologies will play an important role as we look to modernise the farming sector for a more sustainable future. Therefore, we have, to date, supported and funded an industry-led bovine EID pilot focusing on the potential use of ultra-high frequency (UHF) technology across Scotland. Use of low frequency (LF) EID for identification of sheep is already required.

Continue readingCan you help? SRUC is looking for 40 dairy farmers to participate in a project looking a specific strains of STEC. The aim of this project is to better understand whether the STEC strains found in Scottish dairy cattle are similar (or not) to those found in beef cattle, deer, sheep, and human cases. This will increase our knowledge about these bacteria and help us understand whether dairy cattle play any role in the cases of human STEC infection that are reported each year. What will you be doing on-farm? On those farms that sign up to the project, we will carry out two main activities: 1. We will collect dung samples from the ground in the shed or field where the milking herd is kept. The number of samples depends on the number of cows in the group. For example, from a group of 50 cows, we would collect 47 samples, and from a group of 100 cows we would collect 81 samples. 2. We will ask the farm owner or manager to complete a short questionnaire about the milking herd. This will include questions such as the age at first April 17 th, 2024 Page 2 of 2 calving, the average milk yield, calving interval, over-wintering of sheep, and contract-rearing of heifers. This can be completed on paper with us on the day, or we can send it by email if the owner/manager prefers. When will this happen and how long will it take? We plan to visit farms on Mondays/Tuesdays between May and September 2024. The amount of time spent on a farm will depend on the number of samples we need to collect. The questionnaire is short – just one page – so we estimate that we might be on a farm for 1-2 hours, depending on sample numbers needed. What will you do with the samples and information you collect? The samples will all be tested for STEC bacteria. First, we will look for O157 STEC specifically, and then for other STEC, which are not the O157 strain. All the O157 STEC bacteria we find, and a subset of the non-O157 STEC, will be sent away for genetic testing so that we can see if they are related to any of the strains found in beef cattle, deer, sheep, or human cases. We will use the information from the questionnaire to help guide next steps in this area of research. For example, if none of the farms that we sample from have over-wintering sheep then in future we may collect samples from farms that do have over-wintering sheep, giving us more information about types of STEC that are shared between sheep and dairy cattle. Who will get the results of this work? The results of the project will be reported to Scottish Government, who are funding the work, together with Food Standards Scotland. When we report results, they will be combined into overall summary results, and will be anonymised. No individual farm will be identified in the results, and no location information that could identify an individual farm will be presented in the report to Scottish Government and Food Standards Scotland. All producers who volunteer for the project will receive a summary of the project findings at the end of the project, once all sampling and analysis is completed. If any individual producer would like to receive their own results, they can request this. We would then provide the results at the end of the project, once all sampling and analysis is completed.

Continue readingSouth west dairy farmer Rory Christie has successfully played a part in a global dairy project put in place by the Gates Foundation. Entitled ‘Better Cows lead to Better Grades’, the worldwide project started at Scotland’s Rural College, in Edinburgh. There, Raphael Mrode, a Nigerian scientist and expert in the genetics of dairy and meat cattle, and Mike Coffey, a UK scientist, were studying ways to breed smaller cows that would require less feed, and therefore less land to graze on, and also produce more milk than larger cows. Their team was able to identify the genetic traits that led to healthier cows with higher milk production. They bred cows with those traits and monitored their offspring to see how they reproduced. Through using the matchmaking service on his herd, Rory has added 1000 litres per cow. The dairy genetics programme has now been rolled out in Kenya, where more milk from smaller cows is ensuring high quality milk from small herds is playing a vital role in improving health and nutrition.

Continue readingAligned milk cools, while cheese contracts get a boost in April price announcements Prices on retailer aligned milk contracts have cooled following growth in recent months. Tesco and Co-op announced a further price hold in April, while M&S and Sainsbury’s lowered their pricing by -0.7ppl and -0.1ppl respectively as production costs tracked lower in the previous quarter. All eyes will be firmly on production volumes as we head into the spring flush, with fears of a negative impact of the ongoing wet weather on milk supplies. On non-aligned liquid contracts, milk prices have generally seen an uptick in April. Paynes Dairies and Muller Direct have both announced an increase of 1.0ppl with Crediton increasing their price by 0.75ppl. Freshways continue to hold their price, meaning no change has been made since November 2023. The changes announced on cheese contracts were in line with those of non-aligned liquid contracts. All processors on the AHDB league table made a positive change in April, with the exception of Saputo who have held in April after a good uplift in March. Leprino and Belton both moved their prices up by 1.0ppl. Lactalis, First Milk, South Caernarfon Creameries and Wyke Farms all moved their prices up between 0.7-0.8ppl. Wensleydale and Barbers made slightly smaller changes in April at 0.53ppl and 0.50ppl respectively. Manufacturing contracts have seen mixed movements in April. Arla Direct increased their price by 0.84ppl and Pattemores made a smaller upward movement of 0.5ppl. However, Arla UK adjusted their price marginally down (-0.04ppl) reportedly on the back of quarterly currency movements.

Treating mastitis can be incredibly costly and affect saleable milk yields. This is predominantly due to the low availability of other seeds and farmers looking to introduce high quality forage into their rations to reduce the reliance on purchased feeds. The acreage of maize planted has dropped over the last 10 years due to the high establishment costs, cold wet summers which restricted yield and wet autumn conditions which made harvest tricky. There is no doubt that maize is a fantastic addition to a milking cow diet, but there are some key considerations to bear in mind.

Continue readingOnce again the number of dairy herds in Scotland has declined to 794. However, the average herd size is now 227, up 6 from last year and we have reached 180,648 cows – the highest number for a century. Commenting on the latest figures from the Scottish Dairy Cattle Association, Tracey Roan, Dairy Policy Manager said: “The figures are very much following the trend over the last 10 years which is a decrease in the number of dairy herds but increase in cow numbers and herd size. Looking at the figures on a county basis, Dumfriesshire has just taken over Ayrshire to be the largest dairying county, followed by Wigtownshire and then Kirkcudbrightshire. Roxburghshire is home to the largest average herd size of 626. Ayrshire saw the biggest decrease with a net loss of 6 herds followed by Dumfriesshire with a net loss of 4 herds. However, there was a net increase of 3 herds in Aberdeenshire and Wigtownshire, respectively. Janette Mathie, the secretary of the SDCA said: “2023 was a challenging year for Scottish dairy farmers, with reductions in milk prices, labour issues and the cost-of-living crisis but there is optimism and resilience with new dairies due to start up during 2024 and dedication in producing high quality milk and dairy products and breeding superior dairy cattle"
