Thainstone Soil & Nutrient Network: First meeting

Kirkton Farm ,Kinellar, AB21 0SB

Join us for the first meeting of the new Thainstone Soil & Nutrient Network, being held at Kirkton Farm with the kind permission of our hosts, the Campbell family.

This event is the first in a series of three, to be held over the next eighteen months and our experts on the day will include precision farming & soil health specialist David Ross (SAC Consulting) and soils, drainage & crop fertiliser specialist  Gavin Elrick, (SAC Consulting).

The Campbell family who farm at Kirkton are renowned for their attention to detail and run the farm as an all arable unit with cereals and oilseeds.  During this event, we will introduce you to the farm setup before moving on to the main focus areas for the day which will include:

  • Understanding the differences in various soil analysis methods
  • Soil health tests – what are the benefits to be gained by looking at the physical, chemical and biological aspects of your soils?
  • Is min-till better than conventional cultivations?
  • Compaction issues and how to resolve them
  • Cover crops – what lessons have been learnt from on-farm trials?

As lunch is included in this meeting you are asked to use the booking form to secure your place and help us arrange catering.  This is an outdoor and on-farm event, please wear footwear suitable for disinfecting.

Soil and Nutrient Network farms are taking a ‘before and after’ look at how to protect and improve farm soils and make the best use of both organic and inorganic fertilisers, saving money, benefitting yields and improving farm efficiency and resilience.

Even technically efficient farms can find small changes to current soil and nutrient management practices that could make a big difference.
