We are looking to recruit an established Herdsperson

We are looking to recruit an established Herdsperson with a good level of experience and ambition to join our mixed farming business based North East Fife.

We are a mixed family farm milking 350 high yielding Holstein Friesians, milked twice a day through our 20:40 GEA Swingover parlour with cows averaging 10,000 litres at average SCC of 160 and average Bacto at 12. Our milk is sold on a retailer aligned Sainsburys contract via Muller. We are in an exciting period of change moving to a fully flying herd, we are currently still in the transition phase, bringing our own heifers into the herd but now serving with AA and BB semen. We have made on-going investments in farm infrastructure and technology to support the health, welfare, production and management of the herd including ACR’s on the parlour, new and refurbished sand-based cubicles, Ice Robots Cow Alert activity monitoring system, separate management groups for both fresh cows and heifers along with good cow handling facilities and a proactive herd health and vaccination plan. Our current dedicated team proactively monitor and manage fertility and feet with the support of routine visits from the vet and foot trimmer. We are a progressive unit, keen to embrace new technology, which has recently included trialling the Ice Robotics automatic lameness detection system which has further improved our already impressive mobility and hock scores.

The Role: We are looking to recruit an ambitious herdsperson who is ready for the next step in their career, working alongside the farm owner operator team, our long-standing existing Herdsperson and our skilled milking and GFW team. The successful candidate will be an enthusiastic team player keen to work to the highest welfare standards required for our retailer contract. We envisage you will do some milking shifts each week but with a majority of your time dedicated to herd management including overseeing and managing cow health, fertility, welfare and milk quality. You would share responsibility for the associated record keeping and data input onto Uniform along with monitoring cow performance, in particular fertility, against key KPI’s.

Skills, attitude & experience: The successful candidate will have keen stockmanship skills and an eye for cows along with being able to effectively communicate and collaborate with others. We have a continued focus on fertility and would like you to continue driving this forward, so recent AI experience &/or qualifications would be beneficial. Foot trimming skills/experience are not essential but would be useful to work in tandem with our regular foot trimmer if this was a particular area of interest for the successful candidate. An understanding and experience implementing best practice techniques such as selective dry cow therapy and antibiotic use reduction would be helpful, but we offer full training and support to develop your skills and knowledge. As the key person responsible for the herd, you will be competent in the use of farm management software to record, monitor and analyse production and health data and will use this data to make suggestions for improvement. A driving licence is essential for this position.

Pay & Reward: Our competitive package includes a salary ranging from £35-45k depending on the skills and experience you bring to our business and is based on working an average of 60 hours week, including night checks which are on a 3-person rota. We offer every other weekend off and an additional ½ weekday off every other week. We operate a split shift system across the team between the hours of 3.30am – 6.00pm. In addition, we offer generous centrally heated 3-bedroom family house with garden and council tax paid, only a short walk away from the farmstead. Our package meets Scottish Agricultural Wages Board guidelines and includes 33 days annual leave per annum, plus Christmas and New Year and we make pension contributions via NEST pension scheme.
